Tatarstan is a republic of Russia located in Eastern Europe. It is a part of the Volga Federal District.The area of the republic is 68,000 square kilometres. Tatarstan is situated at the confluence of two large rivers – the Volga and the Kama, being a kind of bridge connecting Russia’s European and Asian parts.The population is 3.8 million.More than 173 ethnic origins have lived here in peace and harmony. Kazan is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, an ancient city with a centuries-old history, located on the left bank of the Volga River.
There are several legends associated with the name of the city. The most common of them is that Kazan comes fr om the Tatar word “kazan” – “cauldron”. The legend says that the city was laid in the place where the water boiled without any fire in a cauldron, dug into the ground. The symbol of the city is the mythical dragon-like creature Zilant, depicted on the sigil.
Kazan was founded as an outpost on the northern borders of Volga Bulgaria more than 1000 years ago. The age of the city was estimated during excavations on the territory of the Kazan Kremlin. Then, a Czech coin dated 929-930 years was found, as well as remains of masonry and wooden city walls and utensils.

   Built on an ancient site, the Kazan Kremlin dates from the Muslim period of the Golden Horde and the Kazan Khanate. It was conquered by Ivan the Terrible in 1552 and became the Christian See of the Volga Land. The only surviving Tatar fortress in Russia and an important place of pilgrimage, the Kazan Kremlin consists of an outstanding group of historic buildings dating from the 16th to 19th centuries, integrating remains of earlier structures of the 10th to 16th centuries.
Kul Sharif is one of the largest mosques in Russia, and in Europe outside of Istanbul.

 Annunciation Cathedral of Kazan Kremlin was the first Orthodox church within the walls of the Kazan Kremlin. Initially, a wooden church was quickly built under direction of Tsar Ivan IV in 1552, before it was replaced by a stone cathedral.
Cultural Kazan

Tatar State Opera & Ballet Theatre named after Musa Dzhalil   is one of the most successful and largest theatres in Russia. The theatre annually hosts two large-scale international festivals: the opera festival, dedicated to the singer Feodor Chaliapin, and the ballet festival, which bears the name of the world-famous artist Rudolf Nureyev.

 Galiaskar Kamal Tatar Academic Theatre is the leading Tatar theater.It was founded in 1906.The theater's current repertoire consists mostly of plays written by Tatar playwrights but includes many plays of Russian and foreign playwrights as well.
The theater provides special translation devices to audience members who do not understand Tatar.

Kazan Academic Drama Theatre of Kachalov is located on Bauman Street and is one of the oldest Theatres in Russia. It opened in 1791.The theatre put on the best works of Russian and foreign classics, as well as modern dramas. The repertoire always contains performances based on works by Bulgakov, Ostrovsky, Brecht and Dostoevsky.

Sport Kazan
Kazan Arena stadium hosted the 2013 Summer Universiade opening and closing ceremonies, and 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.In the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the stadium hosted six matches. It has the largest outside screen in the world.

Graffiti in Kazan is a special kind of art. The street artists often find support of the authorities.They depict the national heroes, the images of Russian and Tatar literature or just create colorful paintings to make the city brighter.
